Sponsorship 'opens the floodgates' for Portage skate group grants.

Portage Family Skate Park expects new financial sponsorship will give it “new life” as it pushes for park expansion.

Positively Portage, a community foundation that launched last year, supersedes Portage United Methodist Church as the skate park’s primary sponsor. The foundation’s nonprofit standing provides more opportunities for acquiring grants and gives better tax advantages for donors compared with its previous sponsorship, said Portage Family Skate Park President Kyle Little.

“This solidifies our project, but we owe a lot to Portage United Methodist Church,” Little said. “Without their sponsorship, we wouldn’t even be thinking about a phase two.”

The skate park was not eligible for roughly half of the grants it sought due to the church’s religious status, Little said. Positively Portage’s secular standing, he said, opens the floodgates for grants.

Positively Portage chairman Rich Jacobson said the foundation believes in the skate park and says it aligns with the foundation’s mission to fund improvements in the Portage area. Positively Portage ultimately strives to fill the shoes of the longstanding Bidwell Foundation, which is set to expire in about two years.

“It’s a great fit,” Jacobson said of sponsoring the skate group. “This gives them a lot more freedom to invest and make better returns on the money donated to them.”

Positively Portage seeks donations to its core fund for future projects in the community, which can be accomplished online or sent to its headquarters at 121 W. Cook St., Portage. For more information, visit positivelyportage.org.

The skate park’s new sponsorship occurs not long after the Edward and June Lenz Charitable Trust extended the deadline for matching funds. The matching grant for the skate park totals $37,500 and is now set to expire June 1, 2019.

Portage Family Skate Park has raised approximately $50,000 for future projects and is only about $10,000 away from matching the funds from the Edward and June Lenz Charitable Trust, Little said. The 4,178-square-foot skate park opened in Goodyear Park in August 2016. It cost the city and boosters about $210,000 to design and construct. Phases two and three — already designed at 3,500 square feet each — are expected to cost $130,000 per addition.

“I believe wholeheartedly that our organization fits the bill for Positively Portage, and together we’ll achieve so much more,” Little said. “When Positively Portage came about, I was very happy to see this group of strong individual team members and business owners, these prominent people within our community, saying we’ll take it upon ourselves to help organizations further their causes.”

Is my (grand)child old enough to skateboard?

I remember wondering this when my first grandson came home with skateboarding gear after visiting an uncle.  To me, skateboarding seemed risky and dangerous.  But as I watched him putting on his knee pads and helmet like a pro and say with a smile from ear to ear 'Watch me Grandma!' and sail down the driveway and sidewalk (they have …

PFSP receives donation from local business

Crawford Oil and Propane of Portage has made a pledge to the Portage Family Skate Park to donate $5,000 in the spring of 2018. With the matching grant from the Lenz Foundation, the donation will total $10,000.

“The Crawford family has always supported community projects in Portage,” Crawford Oil president Jon Crawford said. “Not only is the Crawford family a fan of skateboarding, but the discussion of a skate park has been in the works since I was in high school. One of our community financial commitments was coming to a close, and we felt a donation to the skate park was next best project to support.

“In addition, Kyle (Little, PFSP president) has been working so hard over the years and I applaud his persistence and dedication to completing all three phases of the skate park.”

The PFSP was awarded a matching grant from the Lenz Foundation. All money raised for the skate park addition through June 2018 will be matched, up to $37,5000.
