Support Skater Independence!
It’s July and on the 4th, we Americans celebrate our right to independence. What is independence? Some would say, perhaps, maybe it’s the freedom to pursue your own dreams. When we were young, we were probably told by someone, that if we work hard we could be anything we want.
Unfortunately, this isn’t always the truth. There are a lot of kids who get fined for trying to learn to Skate as well as other sports. Good kids are labeled as trouble makers and thugs because they are forced to search the streets for obstacles exposing them to the real thugs. Many kids who deal with this oppression suffer in silence. Ask them their opinion and they might reply; “whatever…” You know the kid I’m talking about. He’s your son or daughter, niece or nephew. These kids need exercise, a hobby, or just a place to hang out. Get them off their game consoles, and out of their dungeons, and out in the sunlight. A renovated Goodyear Park would be just the place. It’s away from down town on the heaviest patrolled police routes in the city.
Goodyear Park, the Splash Pad, and the Portage Family Skate Park, will be a place where kids can dream, and develop physical and social skills they’ll need to achieve those dreams. A place of freedom. Support skater independence!
Portage has already made a big step in the right direction with our refreshing splash pad. Let’s get the job finished. The Portage Family Skate Park will be part of a larger City project to renovate Goodyear Park. There are plans to add a bathroom, showers, and concessions stand. Let’s gather as much as we can by the end of this summer to reach our personal goal of $90,000. Mark your calendar, attend or volunteer for events. Make donations or even sponsor an event.
